FUTURA SEOUL STORY

Futura Seoul derives its name from the Latin word Futura, meaning “Future.”

About Us

FUTURA SEOUL is an art space that opened in September 2024 in Bukchon, Seoul.

It is situated in Bukchon, where past and present coexist in a unique environment shaped by traditional hanok architecture and contemporary sensibilities.

“FUTURA” derives from the Latin word for “future.” Just as the Futura typeface has long represented modern, functional design, FUTURA SEOUL aims to reflect the present while exploring future possibilities through contemporary art.

The space is grounded in a respect for the natural passage of time. A 50-year-old garden at the rear of the site—preserving existing trees and stones—forms an integral part of its environment. The architecture has been designed to allow elements such as light and wind to be fully experienced within the space. This environment encourages visitors to perceive subtle shifts and flows over time, creating a psychological space. Carefully considered architectural elements introduce unexpected moments, and these experiences gradually expand into an embodied experience—one that is both physical and perceptual.

From the earliest stages of its design, the space was developed in close dialogue with artists. Moving beyond the idea of a conventional exhibition venue, it seeks to provide an environment where artworks can be presented in their most appropriate form. Within this relationship, artwork and space influence one another and are completed together.

FUTURA SEOUL is not confined to a single genre. It presents a wide range of practices spanning visual art, architecture, sound, and technology. We believe that new experiences emerge at the intersection of different media and approaches, and we aim to create an environment where visitors can explore freely.

In addition, FUTURA SEOUL continues to develop diverse projects through collaborations with artists, institutions, and brands both in Korea and internationally. Through this network, we seek to expand the experiences that are unique to FUTURA SEOUL and to explore new possibilities in contemporary art with a wide range of partners.

Approach – Cycle of Art

FUTURA SEOUL operates with a focus on one self-initiated exhibition each year. This exhibition serves as a central project that most fully embodies the space’s direction and curatorial approach.

At the same time, FUTURA SEOUL remains open to a wide range of external projects through a space rental program that supports diverse forms of engagement. Brands, institutions, and creatives are invited to work within the space, developing new experiences in ways that respond to its context and character.

Revenue generated through these programs is reinvested into FUTURA SEOUL’s self-initiated exhibitions, forming the foundation for future projects. Within this cycle, one project naturally leads to the next.

FUTURA SEOUL hopes to foster a wide range of collaborations through this structure and remains open to new ideas and proposals.
