In 1973, Anthony McCall’s legendary work <Line Describing a Cone> sent shockwaves through the global art world. Now, Line Describing a Cone 2.0 unfolds anew in Ulsan.

In this work, light becomes sculpture and space becomes time. Through the concept of “Solid Light,” McCall’s iconic piece traverses the boundaries between film, sculpture, and installation, proposing new possibilities for media art. Over approximately 30 minutes, a cone of light is gradually constructed in darkness, responding to the movements and gaze of viewers and creating a field of embodied experience that goes beyond passive observation.

First presented in 1973, the work was reintroduced in 2011 after being translated from film into a digital format.

In 2025, Line Describing a Cone 2.0 was presented as part of Anthony McCall’s first solo exhibition in Asia at Futura Seoul. In 2026, it continues its trajectory at the Ulsan Museum of Art XR Lab, marking another phase of expansion.

This exhibition also serves as an experimental case in which a public institution and a private institution work in close collaboration to jointly realize a major work of international media art. More than a simple transfer of an exhibition, it represents a meaningful attempt to broaden the scope of Korea’s media art ecosystem and to expand the possibilities of contemporary art.

At the moment where light, time, and the presence of the viewer intersect,

Anthony McCall’s <Line Describing a Cone 2.0>, encountered in Ulsan, becomes a significant step toward contemporary media art.
